TEAMSTERS' PRESIDENT CALLS FOR UPS STRIKE

The Teamsters union is urging its 165,000 United Parcel Service employees to strike today over an increase in maximum package weights, despite a court order forbidding a walkout.

A Teamsters source in Washington, D.C., said Sunday that the union expected thousands of workers to heed national president Ron Carey's call for workers to strike the Atlanta-based company. The source spoke on the condition that his name not be used.

A federal judge Friday granted a five-day temporary restraining order against UPS employees taking job action.

The Teamsters are upset over an increase in the maximum package weight from 70 to 150 pounds.

UPS spokesman Bob Kenney said the two sides were still talking Sunday night and that the company expected its employees to report for work. The company said it would operate as usual today, including accepting heavier packages. - Associated Press
