RAIDERS TOPPLE LIBERTY

All five Appomattox starters scored in double figures as the Raiders beat Liberty 83-75 on Monday in a key Seminole District boys' basketball game.

Wendell Hodge scored 23 points and Jason Booker added 20 for Appomattox (11-3 overall, 11-3 district), which avenged an earlier loss to the Minutemen (13-3, 13-3).

Liberty held an 11-10 lead after one period, but the Raiders outscored the Minutemen 46-32 over the middle two quarters to grab a 56-43 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Appomattox made 13 of 17 free throws and held off a furious Liberty rally to hang on for the victory. The Minutemen made five 3-pointers in the fourth and outscored the Raiders 32-27.

Greg Reynolds paced the Liberty comeback by scoring 20 of his 21 points in the second half.

The loss by the Minutemen created a three-way tie for first place in the loss column in the district. Liberty, Appomattox and Jefferson Forest all have three losses.

"Anytime you beat the first-place team, you've got to feel pretty good," Appomattox coach Steve Williams said.

The Raiders' next two games are against the only other teams to beat them - Buckingham and Jefferson Forest. Appomattox plays at Buckingham tonight and hosts Jefferson Forest on Friday.

"We got one back," Williams said. "If we can win the rest of our games, we can at least tie for the regular season title. This was a big win to keep us in that position."

Bruce Jacobs added 16 points for Liberty, and J.J. Coles scored 15. David Ross chipped in 11.

\ Narrows 78\ Fort Chiswell 77

NARROWS - Brandon Hollie banked in a halfcourt 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Green Wave to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers.

Narrows (5-9, 5-7) trailed 77-75 with three seconds remaining, and Fort Chiswell's Jody Burnett was at the free throw line attempting a one-and-one.

After Burnett's shot missed, Brett Mosley grabbed the rebound and passed to Hollie for the game-winner. It was Hollie's only field-goal attempt.\ Staunton River 63\ Amherst 55

MONETA - Geoff Zimmerman gunned in a career-high 32 points as the Golden Eagles won a Seminole District game.

Zimmerman had 12 points in the first quarter and 11 in the fourth quarter, when Staunton River (8-6) sealed its victory. Cornelius Foxx added 14 points and Lynwood English had 11 for the Golden Eagles.

\ Craig County 72\ Highland 30

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets bolted to a 39-12 halftime lead and turned back the Rams in a Pioneer District game.

Robbie Huffman and Gary Abbott had 20 points apiece for Craig County (3-6, 2-4). Chris Blankenship added 12 points. Highland (1-7, 0-6) got nine points from T.J. Honaker.
