MAROONS HIT 19-1, TOP HORNETS 86-83

Bryant Lee scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Roanoke College to an 86-83 victory over Lynchburg College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Monday in Lynchburg.

After being tied 40-40 at halftime, Roanoke outscored Lynchburg by three points in the second half to notch the victory.

The Maroons (19-1 overall, 13-1 ODAC) hit 34 of 53 free throws, and the Hornets (8-11, 5-8) hit 16 of 32. Lynchburg committed 38 fouls to Roanoke's 24.

Hillary Scott added 17 points for the Maroons before fouling out. Jason Bishop scored 14 and Kevin Martin chipped in 12.

Otis Tucker led the Hornets with 25 and Ahmad Smalls scored 20.

In other games Monday:

\ Radford 91, Maryland-Baltimore County 81: In Baltimore, Damian Ingram scored a career-high 23 points and Don Burgess chipped in 20 as the Highlanders beat the Retrievers in the Big South.

Ingram tallied 17 points in the first half, surpassing his previous career-high of 13 points. He hit 12 of 16 free throws, including eight of eight in the first half.

Radford (14-5, 8-3) led for much of the game, bolting to a 16-6 lead just 5:33 into the contest. But the Retrievers (5-14, 4-7) rallied and eventually took a 25-24 lead on a Felton Scott 3-point goal with 7:15 remaining in the half. There were six ties in the half before Radford settled for a 40-37 halftime lead.

UMBC cut the lead to 64-60 on layups by Mark Lay and Spencer Ferguson with 7:51 remaining. But a subsequent layup by Anthony Walker and a pair of free throws by Burgess put the Highlanders up 68-60 with 7:01 left, and UMBC never got within six points the rest of the way.

\ Towson State 79, Liberty 78: In Towson, Md., John James scored the go-ahead basket with 43 seconds left in overtime as the Tigers beat the Flames in the Big South.

Liberty (10-10, 7-5) rallied from an 11-point second half deficit and took a 66-65 lead with 1:50 remaining in regulation on a 3-point basket by Darryl Williams. After freshman guard Michael Keyes hit a pair of free throws to put the Tigers (14-7, 9-2) ahead 67-66, Matt Hildebrand nailed another 3-pointer with 55 seconds left for a 69-67 Liberty lead.

Scooter Alexander cut the margin to 69-68 by hitting one of two free throws with 37 seconds left in regulation. Jody Chapman gave Liberty a 71-68 lead by hitting two free throws with 35 seconds left before Keyes scored on a driving layup, was fouled and hit a free throw to tie the game at 71.

When Hildebrand missed on a 12-foot jumper, the game went into overtime.

\ James Madison 89, William and Mary 85: In Williamsburg, Michael Venson scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Dukes held off the Tribe in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

William and Mary (2-18, 1-8) was trounced by Richmond 105-73 on Saturday but came alive against the Dukes (14-6, 7-2).

Trailing 83-75 with 4:07 remaining, the Tribe's Steve Purpura evaded Clayton Ritter under the basket for two quick baskets. Ritter picked up his fifth foul with 1:40 left. Matt Verkey hit two free throws, and Purpura scored another basket inside to cut the lead to 85-83 with 55 seconds left.

That was as close as the Tribe could get as Venson hit a layup, followed by two free throws by Kent Culuko for an 89-83 lead. Carl Parker got free underneath with five seconds left for the Tribe's last score.

\ UNC Wilmington 80, George Mason 74: In Fairfax, the Seahawks (14-6, 7-2) retained their position atop the Colonial Athletic Conference by defeating the Patriots (8-13, 3-6).

Corey Stewart was the Seahawks' leading scorer with 23 points and 13 rebounds followed by Sherif El-Sanadily with 17 and Chris Meighen 16.

The Seahawks remain tied with James Madison for first place. They have won three straight and four of the last five contests.

The Patriots have lost three straight and are in sixth place. Curtis McCants led the Patriots with 20 points.

\ Richmond 82, Army 76: In Richmond, Jeremy Metzger scored 23 points, including two free throws in the final seconds, as the Spiders held off the Black Knights.

Richmond (9-11) led 52-32 with 16:51 left in the game, but Army (4-15) cut the margin to 78-76 on a layup by Jamie Irick with 20 seconds remaining. Richmond's Mike Hodges then made two free throws with 15 seconds left, and Metzger added his foul shots to clinch the victory.

\ Women

\ Virginia Tech 57, Louisville 53: At Louisville, Ky., Jenny Root had 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Hokies to a Metro Conference victory. Sue Logsdon made a 3-point shot with 42 seconds left to give Virginia Tech a 53-51 lead. Christi Osborne added 13 points for the Hokies (16-4, 4-2), who won their fifth straight.

Louisville (7-12, 4-3) led 32-29 at halftime. The Cardinals got 18 points from Jody Martin.

BRAWL UPDATE: The Colonial Athletic Association suspended three players for their involvement in a bench-clearing brawl at Saturday's Richmond-William and Mary game.

CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said Gary Williams and Derrick Wall of Richmond, along with William and Mary's Shaka Arnold, were suspended for one game for fighting.

Williams and Wall were suspended for Richmond's game with Army on Monday. Arnold's suspension applied to the Tribe's game against James Madison.
