BATH COUNTY TURNS IT ON LATE TO BEAT KNIGHTS

Todd Townsend scored 15 points and Billy Thomas added 14 as Bath County held off James River 59-47 in a Pioneer District boys' basketball game Tuesday.

The Chargers (7-7 overall, 3-4 district) made 7 of 9 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter and outscored the Knights (3-11, 2-7) 20-11 to seal the victory.

Bath County led by only three points entering the final period, but Townsend scored seven of his points in the fourth to lead his team to the win.

Sophomore forward Shahan Burrell led James River with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Perry added 11 points.

James River led 18-17 after the first quarter, but the Knights committed 21 turnovers to the Chargers' seven, leaving an opening for Bath County. \

Galax 62

Shawsville 36

GALAX - The Maroon Tide bolted to an 18-point halftime lead and cruised to a Mountain Empire District victory over the winless Shawnees.

Matt Snow led Galax (4-11, 4-9) with 16 points. Jeff Ross and Tito Crockett added 12 points each.

Shawsville got 14 points from Jeremy Nichols. The Shawnees trailed 32-14 at halftime and never recovered. \

Glenvar 71

Craig County 48

NEW CASTLE - The Highlanders forced the Rockets into 20 second-half turnovers en route to a Pioneer District win.

Glenvar outscored Craig County 18-7 in the first quarter but Craig County rallied in the second to take pull within three by halftime. The Highlanders tightened their defense in the second half and pulled away.

Jason Anderson scored 21 points for Glenvar (9-4, 6-1). Nick Varney had 12 and Josh Williamson added 10.

Robby Huffman led Craig County (3-7, 2-5) with 17 points and Gary Abbott had 12. Both pulled down 10 rebounds. \

Christiansburg 66

Graham 55 BLUEFIELD - Denny Selfe scored seven of his

game-high 25 points in fourth quarter as the Blue Demons outscored the G-Men 20-8 in the final quarter to pull off a non-district upset.

Christiansburg, which trailed 47-46 entering the final quarter, improved to 9-8.

Jay Gray paced Graham (11-4) with 15 points. \
