GILES UPENDS FLOYD COUNTY WITH COMEBACK

Giles rallied from a 13-point first-quarter deficit to beat Floyd County 77-75 in a Mountain Empire District boys' basketball game Tuesday night.

Floyd, despite getting 32 points from Jason Light, suffered its second loss of the season, falling to 12-2 overall and 11-2 in the district. Giles is 8-7 and 8-5.

Giles' Anthony Myers scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, when the Spartans pulled away. Marty Smith made all six of his free throws in the final quarter, as Giles made nine of 13 free throws.

Mitch Reed scored 10 of his 21 points in the third quarter - including two 3-pointers - as Giles tied the score entering the fourth. Floyd fell behind early and didn't get closer than two points late in the game.

Smith finished with 18 and Patrick Steele had 11 for Giles.

Phillip Marshall added 14 and Jamie Warren 13 for Floyd. \

Blacksburg 67

Franklin County 65

ROCKY MOUNT - Tony Wheeler was in the right spot at the right time for the Indians.

Wheeler, parked alone on the baseline, rebounded teammate Jay Safford's errant 18-foot jump shot with one second left and put the ball in the basket as the horn sounded, giving the Indians a non-district win over the Eagles.

The winning play was set up when Blacksburg (6-7) retrieved the offensive rebound after Safford missed two free throws with eight seconds left.

Franklin County (8-8) led 65-63 with 55 seconds left before Blacksburg reeled off the final four points.

The Eagles hurt themselves at the free-throw line, converting only 15 of 35 shots, including four of 15 in the final quarter. Franklin County had hit 45 of its 51 free throws in the past two games before Tuesday.

Safford paced the Tribe with 22 points and Wheeler finished with 15.

Carlos Holland led Franklin County with 22 points. K.C. Hancock added 19 and Chad Foutz 16.

Narrows 57

NARROWS - Brian Boyer hit eight of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and nine of 13 for the game to lead the Blue Devils past the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District game.

Narrows (5-10, 5-8) led 32-27 at halftime and kept the game close until the final 30 seconds when Boyer's free throws sealed the win for Grayson County (15-3, 13-2).

Boyer led all scorers with 29 points. Shane Griffith added 14 points.

With 16 points, Brian Pruett led the Green Wave. Norman Perkins had 14 points and Scott Baught and Patrick Bailey scored 10 each. \

Staunton River 59

Nelson County 45

LOVINGSTON - The Golden Eagles opened with a 13-0 run and Nelson County never recovered in a Seminole District game. Cornelius Foxx had 23 points to lead Staunton River (8-5), which secured the win with a 22-14 fourth quarter. Nelson County (4-11) got 18 points from Chris Simpson. \

Glenvar 71

Craig County 48

NEW CASTLE - The Highlanders forced the Rockets to make 20 second-half turnovers en route to a Pioneer District win.

Glenvar outscored Craig County 18-7 in the first quarter, but Craig County rallied and trailed by three by halftime. The Highlanders tightened their defense in the second half and pulled away.

Jason Anderson scored 21 points for Glenvar (9-4, 6-1). Nick Varney had 12 and Josh Williamson added 10.

Robby Huffman led Craig County (3-7, 2-5) with 17 points and Gary Abbott had 12. Both pulled down 10 rebounds. \

Galax 62

Shawsville 36

GALAX - The Maroon Tide bolted to an 18-point halftime lead and cruised to a Mountain Empire District victory over the winless Shawnees.

Matt Snow led Galax (4-11, 4-9) with 16 points. Jeff Ross and Tito Crockett added 12 points each.

Shawsville got 14 points from Jeremy Nichols. The Shawnees trailed 32-14 at halftime and never recovered. \

Christiansburg 66

Graham 55

BLUEFIELD - Denny Selfe scored seven of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Blue Demons outscored the G-Men 20-8 to pull off a non-district upset.

Christiansburg (9-8) trailed 47-46 entering the final quarter.

Jay Gray paced Graham (11-4) with 15 points. \

Tazewell 64

Radford 56

RADFORD - Three Bulldogs scored 13 points and one had 12 as Tazewell beat the Bobcats in a non-district game.

Radford (4-11) trailed by nine after one quarter and by 14 after three. The Bobcats fought back within five points in the fourth quarter before falling.

Casey Underwood led Radford with 15 points.

Jason Strong, Mike Hairston and Scott Phipps scored 13 points apiece for Tazewell (13-5). Kon Patterson added 12. \

Auburn 86

Fort Chiswell 64

MAX MEADOWS - Terry Millirons fired in 34 points as the Eagles rolled to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Auburn led 47-34 at halftime and extended its lead to 72-45 after three quarters. Jon Reed added 22 points for the Eagles.

Fort Chiswell (7-9, 6-8) got 23 points from Jody Burnett. \

Richlands 71

Carroll County 48

HILLSVILLE - Swingman Matt Hadock scored a game-high 30 points as the Tornadoes blew away the Cavaliers in a non-district game. Richlands (9-7) led 42-19 at halftime and cruised. John Wolford led Carroll County (4-11) with 12 points. \
