LATE SHOT SINKS RAIDERS

Dan Mock's stickback with seven seconds remaining Tuesday night gave Holy Cross an 87-86 victory over North Cross in a battle between the top teams in the Virginia Independent Conference's Southern Division.

North Cross (9-7 overall, 8-3 VIC) led 45-35 at haltime, but Holy Cross (16-4, 12-0) came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 52-41.

Monty Smith led the Raiders with a game-high 38 points and 16 rebounds. Marcus Cardwell added 19 points and 11 assists.

Bryan Lightner led the Gaels with 29 points.

Holy Cross won the last meeting between the teams - 80-66 in January.

\ William Fleming 84\ Albemarle 78

Derrick Hines and Reggie Reynolds combined for 43 points as the Colonels staved off a fourth-quarter rally by Albemarle to capture a non-district victory.

William Fleming (11-4) led 57-43 after three quarters, but Albemarle outscored the Colonels 35-27 in the final period to bring its deficit to six.

Hines had 23 points and six assists for William Fleming. Reynolds scored 20 and Keith Hampton added 15. James Stokes grabbed 11 rebounds, 10 in the second half, for the Colonels.

Marty Jackson scored 19 points to anchor Albemarle (9-9). Travis Jackson chipped in 13.

\ Glenvar 71\ Craig County 48

NEW CASTLE - The Highlanders forced the Rockets into 20 second-half turnovers en route to a Pioneer District win.

Glenvar outscored Craig County 18-7 in the first quarter, but Craig County rallied in the second to trail by three at halftime. The Highlanders tightened their defense in the second half and pulled away.

Jason Anderson scored 21 points for Glenvar (9-4, 6-1). Nick Varney had 12 and Josh Williamson added 10.

Robby Huffman led Craig County (3-7, 2-5) with 17 points and Gary Abbott had 12. Both pulled down 10 rebounds.

\ Lord Botetourt 48\ Rockbridge 43

DALEVILLE - The Cavaliers survived a Rockbridge County rally to win a Blue Ridge District game.

Rockbridge (6-9, 0-7) tied the score midway through the fourth quarter. But Lord Botetourt (8-5, 2-4) made seven of 10 free throws down the stretch.

Marty Early had 25 points for Rockbridge. Gabe Sander led Lord Botetourt with 16 and Billy Arthur had 11.

\ Bath County 59\ James River 47

HOT SPRINGS - Todd Townsend scored 15 points and Billy Thomas added 14 as the Chargers held off the Knights in a Pioneer District game.

Bath County (7-7, 3-4) made 7 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter and outscored the Knights 20-11 to seal the victory.

Bath County led by only three points entering the final period, but Townsend scored seven of his points in the fourth to lead his team to the win.

Sophomore forward Shahan Burrell led James River (3-11, 2-7) with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Perry added 11 points.

James River led 18-17 after the first quarter, but the Knights committed 21 turnovers to the Chargers' seven, leaving an opening for Bath County.

\ Roanoke Catholic 62\ Hargrave Military 61

Jemarh Patterson scored a basket at the buzzer to lift the Celtics to a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the visiting Tigers.

Patterson scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead Roanoke Catholic (7-10, 4-6) to the comeback victory.

The Celtics trailed by seven points with 3 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the game. But Mike Kolnok made two 3-pointers in the final two minutes, and Patterson picked up his scoring pace to lift Catholic.

The Celtics played the fourth quarter without Deon Royer - their leading scorer on the season - who fouled out in the third period.

Billy Reed led Hargrave (4-11, 3-7) with a game-high 35 points. Kunga Mburu added 11 points for the Tigers, who led by 11 points in the third quarter.

Catholic guard Tony Joyce had seven assists.

\ Carlisle 92\ Roanoke Valley Christian 79

Rod Mitchell scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the third quarter as the Indians pulled away from the Eagles in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Roanoke Valley Christian (8-11, 6-5) took a 13-2 lead early in the game and led 43-34 at halftime, but Carlisle (6-13, 4-7) came out fast in the third period, outscoring the Eagles 23-9.

The Eagles turned the ball over 20 times.
