OBIT ANTHONY, REV. ABNER DONALD

ANTHONY, Rev. Abner Donald, 90, of Route 1, Bedford, passed away Sunday, February 6, 1994, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born April 20, 1903, in Bluefield, Virginia, a son of the late Penn Arthur Anthony Sr. and Bunnie Mae Fuqua Anthony. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann Carson Anthony. He was a retired Baptist Minister, having been licensed at the Central Baptist Church, Johnson City, Tennessee. He began his ministry by supplying pulpits as a layman while playing professional baseball with the Norfolk & Western Railroad, Virginia League, as a pitcher. He pastored several churches in the states of Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee, and was also Superintendent of Missions, Daviess-McLean Baptist Association, Owensboro, Kentucky. He authored many church publications including Sunday School Literature, Bible Study outline, W. M. U., Stewardship, Love/Courtship/Marriage outlines, and other various subjects related to the church and its work. He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Ann Anthony Jones, Jefferson City, Tennessee, Helen Louise ("Betsy") Anthony, Charlottesville; a son, John Mark Anthony, Bedford; a sister, Florence Anthony Martin, Roanoke; a brother, Robert D. Anthony, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three grandchildren, Michael Todd Jones, Jefferson City, Tennessee; Brooke Leigh Anthony, Lisa Marie Anthony, both of Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Wednesday, February 9, 1994, at 2 p.m. from the Timber Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, by the Rev. Clayton Riggs. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Timber Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund or the Bedford Lifesaving Crew. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.
