The average cost of intermediate care in a nursing home in Virginia is $76 per day or $27,740 r year. The more you know, the better off you'll be when faced with decisions which affect you or someone you love.

The Virginia Center for Active Retirement at Virginia Tech is presenting a program on "Getting the Most from Your Long-Term Care Programs" on March 2, 9-11 a.m., in conference room F at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center.

Joyce Dixon, benefits consultant with Blue Cross- Blue Shield, will discuss information on home care, adult day care, nursing home and respite care.

The Radford chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will have their monthly potluck dinner on Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. at the senior center. The guest speaker will be Debbie Sullivan of Housecall Health Care, and she will address home health care issues.

The Blacksburg Retired Citizens group has scheduled a trip to the ``ISLANDS IN THE SUN'' FLOWER SHOW In Philadelphia March 5-7. Garden club members and anyone interested in attending the show may participate.

The RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg, 382-5775:

Both Christiansburg groups will go to a valentine reception at Heritage Hall today at 2 p.m.

A Pilot group meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, followed by lunch out.

The Shawsville group will participate in a birthday party and valentine reception at Meadowbrook at 2 p.m. on Monday.

The Warm Hearth group will hold a birthday party and valentine reception at Brookmeade on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

The GILES COUNTY SENIOR CENTER, 1320 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg, 921-3924:

Swim time has been changed to 10:15 a.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This excursion to the Blacksburg pool is open to anyone requiring water therapy for post-surgery, arthritis, back pain or other medicinal purpose.

There will be a potluck lunch at the center at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

On Feb. 18, Berry Evans will speak at the noon AARP meeting.

On Feb. 24, Betty Lou Letsinger will present "Economics of Staying in School" for all Girl Scout cadets and troops. Letsinger, daughter of Robert and Betty Letsinger of Rich Creek, is an active member of the Citrus Girl Scout Council in Orlando, Fla., where she lives.

The CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173:

Help bail the supervisor, Sherry Kostric, out of jail on Feb. 17 when she participates in the Christiansburg Lock Up to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. She needs to have a minimum of $500 raised to be released. If you would like to contribute, call the senior center.

You can hear Kostric the first and third Tuesdays each month at 12:30 p.m. on WKEX 1430-AM radio. She and co-host Bob Smith discuss activities for senior citizens.

Dinner at the Home Place Restaurant in Catawba is scheduled for Friday. Transportation fee is $3, and the van leaves the National Guard Armory at 4:30 p.m.

You must pre-register at the center to participate in the Valentine's Day Cake Walk. Cost is $1, and the event takes place at the National Guard Armory at 1 p.m. on Monday.

Free tax assistance from the American Association of Retired Persons will be available 1-4 p.m. on Feb. 10 and 24, March 10 and 24 and April 7. Appointments must be made in advance by calling 382-8173.

The PULASKI SENIOR CENTER, 106 N. Washington Ave., 980-3969:

A round-table luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. Cost is $2 for lunch and the program, and you need to register by Friday. Brenda Burruss, nursing supervisor for the Pulaski County Health Department, will be introducing the "Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Service" being offered by the department and the New River Valley Agency on Aging.

Appointments are needed for free tax assistance being offered on Wednesdays between 1 and 4 p.m.

The RADFORD SENIOR CENTER, 27 First St., 731-3634:

Radford Retired Teachers will meet Thursday at 2 p.m. at the center.

A lunch trip to Quincy's in Salem on Friday will include free time at Tanglewood Mall. Departure time is 10 a.m., and transportation fee is $2.

A trip to Mount Airy, N.C., is planned for Feb. 18. Lunch will be on your own at Libby Hill Seafood Restaurant, and free time at the outlet stores is scheduled. Transportation fee is $2.

For trippers planning to go to Nashville or the Southern Spring Show in Charlotte, final balances are due on Tuesday.
