Festival head leaving

Laura Oaksmith, Virginia Festival of American Film director for two years, has announced that she will leave her post May 1. The festival, presented at the University of Virginia since 1988, attracted increased national attention under her direction. Oaksmith will pursue related job opportunities in the Richmond area. She had directed the Virginia Film Office, which promotes the state as a movie location.

`Romantic Readings'

Artemis, artists and writers of the Blue Ridge, will hold "Romantic Readings by Virginia Writers" on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Billy's Ritz near the Roanoke City Market, with poetry presented by Lou Ann Keener, Eric Tretheway, Carol Murphy and Susie Mee, and with fiction read by Katherine Stuart, Susie Mee and Mary Crockett.

Music will be by Mickey Nelson and Drew Dowdy.

Bill Meck lecture

WSLS-Channel 10 meteorologist Bill Meck will present a lecture tonight at 7:30 at the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville. Meck will discuss the anti-global warming theory.

Free plays at Barter

ABINGDON - Barter Theatre, Mill Mountain Theater and ShenanArts of Staunton will present new plays at a free program Friday through Sunday Feb11-13 at Barter.

Mill Mountain will perform ``A God in the House,'' about a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease, by Peter Selgin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

ShenanArts will offer ``Small Sacrifices'' by Tom Zieger, which deals with bigotry and abuse, at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Barter's play will be ``Glenn Yazzi's Chindi'' by Big Stone Gap native Frank Lowe at 4 p.m. Sunday, about a conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and Navajo Indians in Arizona.

Admission is free to all performances. Audiences are welcome to stay after performances to discuss the plays with writers and casts.
