LAST CASE FROM TAILHOOK DISMISSED

The last remaining case stemming from the drunken debauchery at the 1991 Tailhook convention was dismissed because of insufficient evidence, an attorney said Wednesday.

Of 140 cases stemming from the scandal, no one has been court-martialed. About 50 Navy and Marine officers received administrative discipline.

Quantico Marine Corps Base issued a release Wednesday saying Lt. Gen. Charles C. Krulak had adjudicated the case against a Marine lieutenant colonel without imposing punishment.

It did not identify the colonel, but the attorney for Marine Lt. Col. Cass D. Howell identified his client as the defendant.

The dismissals could mean no one will face court-martial.

Krulak handled the Tailhook cases against Marines. Tuesday, a military judge, Capt. William T. Vest Jr., dismissed Tailhook charges against three Navy officers.

The admiral handling Navy Tailhook cases, Vice Adm. J. Paul Reason, has until Friday to decide whether to appeal Vest's decision to throw out those charges.
