BRAMMER GIVES VIKINGS A BOOST OVER ALLEGHANY

Chad Brammer came off the bench to score 25 points, nearly twice his previous career high of 13, helping Northside to an 86-75 Blue Ridge District victory Tuesday night over Alleghany.

Alleghany (9-7 overall, 3-4 district) had won three straight games.

Brammer made 10 of 13 field-goal attempts, including five of seven 3-point attempts from the wing.

Northside (15-2, 6-1) also received assistance from Nathan Hungate, the district's second-leading scorer, who matched Brammer with 25 points.

Northside slowed down Alleghany center Todd Wheatley, who was riding a scoring binge. Wheatley scored 15 points, on 7-of-11 shooting, but was held to two field goals after halftime. James Hughes paced the Mountaineers with 19 points. \

In other games Tuesday:

\ Covington 59, Parry McCluer 57: At Covington, Robert Roman made two free throws with four seconds remaining and the Cougars upset the Fighting Blues in the Pioneer District.

Parry McCluer (13-2, 6-1) led 51-39 at the start of the fourth quarter before Covington (9-7, 7-1) went on a 14-2 spurt to tie the score with 3:49 remaining.

Keeno Jones led Covington with 22 points. Parry McCluer got 21 points from Kris Carter. \

Martinsville 69, Fieldale-Collinsville 46: At Martinsville, Carlos Martin paced three Bulldogs in double figures with 18 points as Martinsville rolled to the Piedmont District win. Martinsville (13-3, 12-2) outscored Fieldale-Collinsville (9-9, 9-6) by 13 points in the second quarter to take control. \

Laurel Park 72, Patrick County 61: At Stuart, Warrick Scott scored 26 points as the Lancers beat the Cougars in a Piedmont District game.

Laurel Park stretched a one-point halftime lead to six by the end of the third quarter. Patrick County, trying to catch up, sent the Lancers to the free throw line where they made 26 of 37 in the game, including 22 makes in the second half. Patrick County was 0-for-2 from the line in the game. \

Chilhowie 68, Rural Retreat 67: At Rural Retreat, D.J. Preston dominated the scoring with 35 points as the Warriors held off the Indians in the Hogoheegee District.

With seven seconds left in the game and Rural Retreat up 67-66, Chilhowie's Shane Olinger took an inbounds pass and went straight to the hoop to score the winning basket.

Rural Retreat (7-7, 6-6) was led by Stephen Pratt with 17 points. \

Carlisle 92, Roanoke Valley Christian 79: Rod Mitchell scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the third quarter as the Indians pulled away from the Eagles in a Virginia Independent Conference game. Carlisle (6-13, 4-7) came out fast in the third period, outscoring the Eagles 23-9.

\ Lord Botetourt 48, Rockbridge 43: At Daleville, the Cavaliers survived a Rockbridge County rally to win a Blue Ridge District game.

Rockbridge (6-9, 0-7) tied the game midway through the fourth quarter. But Lord Botetourt (8-5, 2-4) made seven of 10 free throws down the stretch.

Marty Early had 25 points for Rockbridge. \

George Wythe 57, Northwood 56: At Wytheville, the Maroons escaped with a Hogoheegee District victory as Panthers missed a potential game-winning shot as time expired.

Wythe led the entire fourth quarter, but missed the front end of three one-and-one free throws - the final miss setting up Northwood's final possession. Jeff Bourne led Wythe(9-7, 8-3) with 18 points.

\ Magna Vista 90, Dan River 64: At Ridgeway, Tony Holmes and Evan Penn combined for 22 first-half points as the Warriors whipped the Wildcats in a Piedmont District game. Holmes finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Penn added 16 points for Magna Vista (12-3, 12-3). \

Chatham 57, Bassett 48: At Chatham, Derick Logan scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Cavaliers to a come-from-behind Piedmont District win over the Bengals. Jermaine Fitzgerald also had 17 points for Chatham. Art Wade had 11, while Chris and Tyree Hairston contributed 10 apiece for Bassett (5-10, 5-8). \

Auburn 86, Fort Chiswell 64: At Max Meadows, Terry Millirons fired in 34 points as the Eagles rolled to a Mountain Empire District victory. Fort Chiswell (7-9, 6-8) got 23 points from Jody Burnett. \

Mercer Christian 87, Covington Boys' Home 82: At Covington, the Cavaliers built a 12-point lead, then staved off a furious rally down the stretch by the Indians to record a non-district win. Donnie Costigan had 29 points and Scottie Forbes 19 for the Indians. \

Bland 61, Rocky Gap 56: At Rocky Gap, the Rockets hit key free throws in the fourth quarter and turned back the Eagles for a Mountain Empire District victory. Bland made 8 of 10 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Shannon Havens led Bland (9-8, 8-6) with 16 points. Joe Cromer had 14 points for Rocky Gap (9-8, 8-6). \

Grayson County 66, Narrows 57: At Narrows, Brian Boyer hit 8 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and 9 of 13 for the game to lead the Blue Devils past the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District game. Boyer led all scorers with 29 points. \

Carlisle 27, North Cross 26: At Martinsville, Katie Haskins scored 11 points as the Indians sqeaked by the Raiders in a girls' game. Carlisle (3-12) used a 10-3 second period to take control.
