OBIT DONNELLY, LORETTA ROBINSON

DONNELLY, Loretta Robinson, 48, of 1588 W. Little Neck Rd., Virginia Beach, died Wednesday, February 8, 1994 at her home following a two year battle with brain cancer. She was Director Accounting Policy with Norfolk Southern Corporation. Ms. Donnelly was born January 24, 1946 in Smyth County where she graduated Saluatorian from Rich Valley High School. Further academic achievements included a B.S. in Accounting, an M.B.A. and Advanced Graduate Study beyond Masters at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She was currently enrolled in the doctorial program at Old Dominion University. Ms. Donnelly, a C.P.A., began her career with Norfolk Southern in 1970 when she was hired as a Tax Accountant in Roanoke, Va. by the Norfolk and Western Railway, a predecessor of NS. Other positions held in the company included Cost Analyst, Senior Profitability Analyst, Manager Budgets and Director Budget Planning and Evaluation. She moved to the Norfolk area in 1983 in conjunction with the merger of the N&W with the Southern Railway Co. to form Norfolk Southern. She was a founding member of the Southwest Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants and served as its president in 1979 and 1980. She was a former member of the Roanoke Network for Professional and Managerial Women and served as its president in 1982. She was a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants where she sat on the Members in Industry and Government Committee. She was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the Institute of Management Accountants. Ms. Donnelly has served on the Advisory Board to the Department of Accounting at Virginia Tech since 1988. She is survived by her husband, Joseph M. Donnelly; two sons, Joseph M. Donnelly III (Mike), Benjamin T. Donnelly (Trev), all of Virginia Beach; her mother, Julia Harris Robinson, Bristol; two brothers, David A. Robinson, Spring, Texas, Charles E. Robinson, Roanoke; eight nieces; and seven nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, February 12, 1994, at 11 a.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Road Chapel by the Rev. Warren Chapman. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
