State police obtained the warrant against Bob Denham, who is employed with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, on Wednesday.
Lillian S. Francis, 81, was killed when her car was struck by Denham's pickup truck on Huffville Road.
Denham, maintenance chief for the Sheriff's Office, was off-duty at the time of the accident.
In November, State Trooper R.L. Tompkins said the wreck happened one-tenth of a mile from Denham's home.
Tompkins said Denham was on his way to Christiansburg and Francis was on her way to her home nearby when the car and the truck collided head-on.
Huffville Road is an unmarked road with an unposted speed limit of 55 mph.
Tompkins estimated Denham was traveling 55 mph at the time of the accident.
Denham, 53, suffered minor injuries in the accident and was able to radio for help, get out of his truck and go to a nearby home to call 911.
"He made every effort to save the lady," Tompkins said in November.
Reckless driving is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine. A Feb. 28 court date has been set.
