CRAIG SCHEDULES HEARING ON 6-YEAR HIGHWAY PLAN

The annual public hearing on a six-year plan for secondary highways in Craig County will be held on March 15 by the county's board of supervisors.

The hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the county courthouse in New Castle and will be part of the regular supervisor's meeting.

The plan, which projects highway work for six years into the future, is revised each year, and the annual public hearing is the time for citizens to request highway and bridge improvements.

Scott Hodge, assistant resident engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation, said the plan for Craig contains about $300,000 worth of work each year. No major projects have been added to this revision, he said. The updated plan was presented to the supervisors Monday.

The hearing allows citizens to comment on the plan before it is acted on by the supervisors, Hodge said. The hearing may bring about further revisions.

On another matter, the supervisors voted to oppose two bills in the General Assembly that Supervisor Chairman Zane M. Jones said would cost the county money.

One is Senate Bill 483, which would allow the state to hire personnel for Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and charge the expenses to localities. Under the present system, the state pays those expenses.

The other measure is Senate Bill 560, which would reduce state funding for fringe benefits in sheriff's departments while increasing the sheriff's fees to make up that amount.

Jones said both bills would transfer expenses from the state to the localities and in effect would be a tax increase for the people.
