BLACKSBURG MAN RESCUED FROM BURNING TRAILER

A Blacksburg man was treated for smoke inhalation Tuesday night after a friend rescued him from a burning trailer.

David Mitchem, 41, was overcome by smoke as he tried to escape the fire. He passed out at the trailer's front door, Blacksburg police said. The fire at 805 Orchard St. was reported shortly before 10 p.m.

Paul Bailey, who also lives at the trailer, returned from a store, found Mitchem lying on the floor and pulled him to safety.

Mitchem was in respiratory arrest, police said. He was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation and later released.

Keith Bolte, Blacksburg's fire chief, said the fire apparently started in bedding material. The trailer was destroyed.
