WIFE OF FORMER VMI CHIEF IRBY DEAD AT AGE 75

Anne Short Irby, wife of former Virginia Military Institute Superintendent Lt. Gen. Richard L. Irby, died Thursday at her home. She was 75.

Irby was "a warm and gracious hostess who endeared herself to a host of military and VMI colleagues," according to a release from the school.

Irby, a native of Brunswick County, is survived by her husband; two sons, Col. Richard Irby of Carlisle Barracks, Pa., and William Steed Irby of Statesboro, Ga.; and a daughter, Debra Irby Mulligan of Front Royal.
