WESTMORELAND DEPUTIES PATROL FOR TIRE DUMPERS

Illegal dumping of used tires is on the rise in Westmoreland County, and sheriff's deputies have been instructed to stop trucks carrying tires at night.

Authorities on Wednesday discovered their third heap of used tires in two weeks near a back road north of Montross. This time, the pile contained only 15 to 20 tires, Sheriff C.W. Jackson said.

Last week, two piles containing about 125 worn-out truck tires were found in adjoining subdivisions in the eastern part of the county.

In all three cases, the tires appeared overnight and were dumped on private property without the owner's permission.

Jackson theorized that the tires are being dumped by haulers who have been hired to take them to authorized disposal sites, but have found it more profitable to empty their loads in the woods.

"I know of only a few successful prosecutions," said Allan Lassiter, manager of the waste tire program for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. "We have the same problem in almost every jurisdiction in the state."
