OBIT KINNEY, CLYDE L.
KINNEY, Clyde L., 73, of Tower Road, Rt 3, Bassett, died Thursday, February
10, 1994, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was the
husband of Madgie Prillaman Kinney; he was born October 10, 1920, in Bassett
to the late William N. Kinney Jr. and the late Mary Mills Kinney. He was
retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he was appointed postmaster at
Bassett by President Eisenhour in 1953. He served in this position for 30
years. Prior to his position as postmaster he was employed by Bassett
Furniture Industries in Sales from 1940 to 1949. He was a graduate of the
Lexington North Carolina School System; he attended Augusta Military Academy
and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from
National Business College in Roanoke; he was a veteran of World War II; where
he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps; he was Post Commander of Bassett
American Legion Post #11; and was Financial Officer of the post since 1953. He
was a charter member of Bassett Volunteer Fire Department and 1st president of
that organization; he was a member of Dick Bell Lodge #155 and served as
secretary of the Old Bassett Touchdown Club for 10 years. He was an ardent
supporter of Bassett High School Athletic Program; and was honored by the
school in 1968 with an award in recognition of his outstanding service to the
athletics; he served on the Finance Committee of the Martinsville and Henry
County United Way Campaign for 2 years from 1980 to 1982; he was a member of
the Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church for 60 years where he also served
as a member of the Administrative Board. Surviving in addition to his wife;
two daughters, Martha Wade Holland, Collinsville, Mary Virginia (Ginny) Kinney
of Bassett; two stepdaughters, Evona Vangemeren, Libertyville, Ill., Mrs. Coy
(Laura) Young, Bassett; two sons, William N. (Bill) Kinney, Bassett, John
Jackson Kinney of Bassett; two stepsons, Wildon H. Adkins Jr. of Roanoke, Glen
C. Adkins, Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Mary K. Hart, Bassett; five
grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral
services will be held Saturday 11 a.m. at the Bassett Memorial United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Meredith officiating. Burial will follow in
Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville. Family will receive friends Friday from 7 to
8:30 p.m. at the church. Collins Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
