IBM TO OPEN OUTLET FOR OUTDATED WARES

International Business Machines Corp. will sell its discontinued computers direct to customers through a factory outlet store in a Raleigh, N.C., suburb, the company said Thursday.

The move is a new tack in retailing by the troubled computer giant. But it also addresses the problem of profits it has forgone in the past by selling such goods only to surplus dealers.

Dealers have routinely resold the wares at huge mark-ups into a thriving back-channel market for IBMs. - Washington Post
