HEY, A FAIR NUMBER OF US LIKE NIXON

Maybe it was China. Maybe it was the way he cried at Pat's funeral. But it seems that you all don't hate Richard Nixon anymore, either.

Fifty-six readers responded to our Infoline survey last week, which tried to answer the question: Do reporters and their readers have things in common?

Fifty percent of you gave Nixon a positive rating of five or above on that survey, on a scale of one to nine.

Our staff felt pretty good about Nixon, too: 54 percent of the 13 of us who filled out the survey gave him a positive rating.

The rest of the results, while not very scientific, were interesting.

Thirty percent of you never bring your lunch to work while 25 percent of you bring your lunch four or five times a week. Only 15 percent of our staff brings lunch to work four or five times a week; 38 percent of us never bring lunch to work.

A lot of us seem to have an independent streak: 66 percent of you would rather own a business than work for someone else; 62 percent of our staff members want to be in business for themselves.

Thirty percent of you live within five miles from where you grew up; 43 percent of you are more than 100 miles from home. Here, 38 percent of us are within five miles of home; 23 percent are more than 100 miles away.

Sixty-four percent of you commute only a short distance to work; 11 percent of you commute more than 20 miles a day, one way. Thirty-eight percent of our staff members drive up to five miles; 23 percent of us are in the car for more than 20.

We don't know our neighbors very well, but 41 percent of you know your neighbors reasonably well. For our staff, that number was 62 percent. Not very well? Readers: 39 percent Staff: 31 percent.

Twenty-one percent of you gave Roseanne Arnold a positive rating, and 23 percent of our staff did.

Twenty-nine percent of you gave Rush Limbaugh a positive rating; 31 percent of our staff did.
