SHERIFF TO LOOK AT PRISON REFORM

Wythe County Sheriff Wayne Pike has been sworn in as a member of the Governor's Commission on Parole Abolition and Sentencing Reform.

He is the only sheriff or police officer to serve on the commission, which will make legislative proposals to Gov. George Allen for presentation to the General Assembly this spring.

The proposals are to cover doing away with parole, and restructuring sentencing so violent criminals are locked up longer and nonviolent criminals get alternative punishment such as work projects.

Allen addressed the commission in Richmond earlier this month and said the goal is to have its recommendations in place and functioning within 14 months of the special legislative session.
