NEXT TIME, BE PREPARED HERE'S WHAT WE WISH WE HAD DONE. BUT REMEMBER, WINTER

STOCK UP on wood and kerosene for backup heat, and fuel for a cookstove if you have one. If you don't, maybe you should.

\ STORE WATER in plastic jugs for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth. One gallon per person per day. When bad weather is forecast, fill a couple of pails for flushing the commode.

\ STASH A 3-DAY SUPPLY of non-perishable food, preferably ready-to-eat. Peanut butter, crackers, trail mix, canned food - and a non-electric can opener. And don't forget food and water for pets.

\ HAVE A basic first-aid kit.

\ KEEP EXTRA batteries for radios and flashlights. Candles are nice, too.

\ MAKE SURE YOU have enough blankets and warm clothes available. Hats are important: up to 90 percent of body heat is lost through the top of the head.

\ KEEP CARDS, letter-writing material, a good book, Monopoly - whatever - handy. There will be no TV.

\ EMERGENCY PLANNERS also suggest planning a strategy with family members and neighbors to assist one another in any type of disaster.
