FIELDCREST TO BUILD TOWEL PLANT IN ALABAMA

Fieldcrest Cannon Inc. announced plans Monday to build a 328,000-square-foot towel weaving facility at the site of the company's cut-and-sew and warehouse operation in Phenix City, Ala.

Construction is expected to begin in March and be completed in 10 months. It is expected that the plant, which will cost $90 million to build and equip, will be operating at full capacity sometime in 1996, employing 400.

Company officials were unavailable Monday to comment on the new plant's impact on Fieldcrest's existing towel mill in Henry County. - Staff report
