UPS ACCUSED OF HARASSING DRIVERS

The Teamsters union Monday accused United Parcel Service of harassing and threatening union members who refuse to carry packages weighing more than 70 pounds without the aid of another Teamster driver.

Ron Carey, Teamsters' president, responding to worker complaints, notified all locals of language in an agreement reached last week that permits a Teamster driver to enlist the aid of another union member to help carry shipments weighing between 70 pounds and 150 pounds.

The union, which represents 165,000 UPS employees, said it received reports throughout last week of retaliation by UPS management.

UPS' decision to raise its weight limit to 150 pounds triggered a one-day Teamsters strike Feb. 7. Last week's agreement ended the work stoppage.

Susan Rosenberg, a UPS spokeswoman, said she was unaware of any incidents.
