BIG EAST ADS WANT TIME

Big East Conference athletic directors said Monday they want more time to decide whether to invite the league's four football-only schools, including Virginia Tech, to join the league as basketball members.

The athletic directors plan to review the issue with their school presidents. Then the conference will schedule a meeting of all athletic directors and school presidents. The date for that meeting has not been set.

Conference officials are considering adding the four football-only members - West Virginia, Temple, Rutgers and Virginia Tech - to the 10-team Big East basketball conference.

Of the eight-team football conference, only Miami, Syracuse, Boston College and Pittsburgh play both football and basketball.

The basketball powers - Georgetown, Connecticut, St. John's, Villanova, Seton Hall, and Providence - oppose expansion. Seven votes out of 10 are needed for approval.

Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese has said the league's football conference is negotiating a television deal with CBS and ESPN that would take effect in the 1996 season.
