IT MAY BE END OF WEEK BEFORE POWER'S ON IN SOME PARTS OF VA.

Utility crews restored power to thousands of customers across the state Monday, but 89,500 were still without electricity, and officials said some may not get power back until late this week.

In the Roanoke area, 2,000 customers were without power at 10 p.m. Monday night, APCO spokeswoman Victoria Ratcliff said.

The areas hardest hit include Chamblissburg in Bedford County, Poages Mill in Roanoke County, Copper Hill in Floyd County and Montvale. Overnight crews are also working on scattered outages throughout the area.

A group of state officials made an aerial survey of trouble spots Monday, said Mike LaCivita, a spokesman for the state Department of Emergency Services.

Virginia Power president Jim Rhodes and another top utility official used a private helicopter to survey the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas.

Utilities are still tabulating the cost of the storm, but they've said it will be in the millions of dollars.
