Car makers recall 147,500 vehicles

DETROIT - Mercedes-Benz of North America, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. are recalling a total of 147,500 vehicles, Mercedes for a defect that could cause engine-compartment fires, and Ford to fix an emissions problem. Chrysler's action is to fix wiring that could cause the lights to fail or the engines to stop.

Mercedes said it is recalling 5,900 of its 1992 and early 1993 model 400E vehicles to install a larger heat shield and move a hose to prevent fuel-vapor leaks. No accidents or injuries have been reported, but owners were urged not to use the air conditioner until the repair is made.

Ford said it is recalling about 31,500 1988 Ranger compact pickups with 2.0-liter engines. Tests by Ford and the Environmental Protection Agency indicate some of the trucks might emit too high a level of nitrous oxide.

Chrysler's recall affects the Chrysler Concorde, New Yorker and LHS, and Dodge Intrepids and Eagle Visions built from late July through early December.

The defect could cause wiring to touch a portion of the steering mechanism, causing a short-circuit that would black out the car's lights or prevent it from starting, Chrysler said. The problem can be corrected by adding a bracket to hold the wire in place.

TeleCable exploring a possible sale

NORFOLK - TeleCable Corp. has hired the investment banking firm of Lehman Brothers to help it explore a possible sale and other options, a company spokesman said Monday.

Cable analysts say the Norfolk-based company could bring as much as $1.5 billion, based on recent prices. But TeleCable spokesman Michael Smith said it's too early to say whether the company will be sold.

TeleCable has 710,000 subscribers nationwide and is the 18th-largest cable-system operator in the country.

TeleCable is a former subsidiary of Landmark Communications., parent of the Roanoke Times and World-News. The companies are now legally separate, although they share the same chairman, Frank Batten of Virginia Beach.
