FIGHTING BLUES CRUSH KNIGHTS

Parry McCluer went on a second-quarter scoring blitz to take control and defeat James River 83-36 in a Pioneer District boys' basketball game Tuesday night.

The Fighting Blues, the state's No. 5-ranked team in Class A, turned up their defensive pressure in the second quarter, creating turnovers, steals and layups. That pressure turned an 11-11 tie into a 42-12 Parry McCluer lead.

Kris Carter led Parry McCluer with 18 points

James River (3-12, 2-8) never recovered. The Knights were outscored 33-6 in the second quarter and 26-8 in the third period. Keith Bryant led James River with 11 points. \

INDEPENDENCE - Keith Weatherman had 10 of his 16 points during a third-quarter surge as the Blue Devils rallied to win a Mountain Empire District game.

Grayson County (17-3, 15-2) trailed 24-19 before going on a 14-4 spurt to take control. Weatherman had 10 points during the rally. Bryan Boyer had 22 points to lead all scorers, and Weatherman added five rebounds and six assists.

Rocky Gap (5-14, 5-12) got 10 points from Nathan Blessing. \

Covington 75

Bath County 47

HOT SPRINGS - Sophomore center Greg Entsminger scored a career-high 16 points as the Cougars won their eight straight game with a Pioneer District victory over the Chargers.

Senior Keeno Jones led Covington (11-7, 9-1) with 17 points, and Corey Hunter added 10.

Bath County (7-8, 3-5), which suffered its worst defeat of the season, was led by Billy Thomas and Michael Edwards with eight points each. \

Bland 56

Galax 46

BLAND - Shannon Havens scored 10 points to lead the Rockets to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Maroon Tide.

Bland (10-8, 9-6) shot only 6-of-15 from the free-throw line but outscored Galax (4-11, 4-13) in the fourth quarter.

Matt Snow had 14 points for Galax, and Tito Crockett added 12.

Kevin King had nine rebounds for Bland. Jeff Ross had nine boards for the Maroon Tide. \

Monday's games

\ Parry McCluer 78, Glenvar 60: Mike McElroy scored 11 of his 22 points in the second quarter as the Fighting Blues rolled past the Highlanders for a Pioneer District win.

Parry McCluer (15-1, 8-1) outscored Glenvar 25-7 in the second quarter to take a 36-18 halftime lead and cruised to victory.

Nathan Baker scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Fighting Blues.

Jason Anderson had 17 points for the Highlanders (9-5, 6-2). Josh Williamson scored 13 points, and Brad Melton added 12. \

Grayson County 63, Fort Chiswell 47: In Fort Chiswell, Bryan Boyer scored 18 points as the Blue Devils whipped the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game.

Grayson County took a 29-18 halftime lead, and Fort Chiswell never recovered. Shane Griffith added 11 points for the Blue Devils, and T.J. King led Fort Chiswell with 13 points. \

Meadowbridge 81, Covington Boys' Home 67: In Covington, Mike Brown scored 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Meadowbridge downed the Indians in a non-district contest.

Covington Boys' Home (10-7) led 33-32 at halftime and trailed by six in the fourth quarter before Meadowbridge hit 9-of-11 free throws to capture the win.

Scottie Forbes led the Indians with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Donnie Costigan had 17 and Miles Thornton added 10. Greg Kier had eight assists.

\ Bassett 77, Dan River 56: In Ringgold, Art Wade scored 25 points and Tyree Hairston added 18 as the Bengals whipped the Wildcats in a Piedmont District game.

Bassett (7-10, 7-8) led 32-28 at halftime, and used a 20-8 third period to put the game out of reach. \
