GOP NOMINATES FIRST 3 TO RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL

Republicans on Tuesday gave themselves until March 1 to field a full slate of four candidates in Roanoke City Council elections set for May 3.

At a nominating meeting, the GOP nominated businessman John Voight for a special election to fill the unexpired term of former Councilman Bev Fitzpatrick Jr.

The GOP also nominated Planning Commission member Barbara Duerk and engineer John "Jack" Parrott for two of three at-large seats.

The 54 Republicans who paid $2 each to attend the meeting in City Council chambers gave the party two weeks to come up with a third candidate for an at-large seat.

GOP Chairman William Fralin Jr. said the executive committee may have an answer this week.

Democrats will chose their slate of candidates in a March 1 primary open to all city voters.
