NORTHSIDE SINKS LORD BOTETOURT

Northside capitalized on a strong first quarter to earn a 68-53 Blue Ridge District boys' basketball victory over Lord Botetourt on Tuesday.

Justin Porterfield and Nathan Hungate each scored 17 points for the Vikings (18-2 overall, 8-1 district), who remained a game behind Salem in the district standings heading into the teams' showdown Friday night.

Northside used pressure defense in the first quarter to force several Cavaliers turnovers and take a 19-7 lead. Lord Botetourt came back to outscore the Vikings 18-14 in the second quarter, but faded after that.

Dana Gibson added 13 points, and Sam Barrett had 10 for Northside.

Lord Botetourt (9-8, 2-7) was led by Jeff Cronise with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Shannon Williams and Gabe Sander added 13 points each.

\ William Byrd 87\ Rockbridge County 79

Donald Childress drove the length of the floor to score and send the game into overtime as the Terriers capped a frantic fourth-quarter rally and won a Blue Ridge District game.

William Byrd (10-8, 4-5) trailed by 16 points in the third quarter and by 10 points with 3 1/2 minutes left in regulation. Jeremy Obenchain had 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter and scored four points in overtime. Chris Childress led the Terriers with 22 points and Donald Childress added 18.

Rockbridge County (6-10, 0-8) seemed to be in control and led by 13 points after three quarters. Marty Early led the Wildcats with a game-high 37 points, and Rob Hoyle added 16 points.

William Byrd trailed 73-67 late in the fourth quarter before hitting consecutive 3-point shots to knot the score.

Donald Childress went the length of the floor after a missed Rockbridge County free throw and scored with 2 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

\ Carlisle 68\ Roanoke Catholic 64

MARTINSVILLE - Kevin Warren scored eight of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter and the Cavaliers hung on for a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Celtics.

Carlisle (7-13, 5-7) led 39-26 at halftime, but were outscored 20-12 in the third quarter when Roanoke Catholic cut the lead to 51-46. The Cavaliers held an 18-17 advantage in the final quarter.

Deon Royer paced Roanoke Catholic (7-13, 4-9) with 22 points, including three 3-pointers. Jemarh Patterson added 16 points and Tony Joyce 14 for the Celtics.

\ Parry McCluer 83\ James River 36

The Fighting Blues went on a second-quarter scoring blitz to take control and defeat the Knights in a Pioneer District game.

Parry McCluer, the state's No. 5-ranked team in Class A, turned up its defensive pressure in the second quarter, creating turnovers, steals and layups. That pressure turned an 11-11 tie into a 42-12 Parry McCluer lead.

James River (3-12, 2-8) never recovered. The Knights were outscored 33-6 in the second quarter and 26-8 in the third period. Keith Bryant led James River with 11 points.

\ North Cross 93\ Hargrave Military 75

CHATHAM - Marcus Cardwell had his third triple-double of the season with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Raiders over the Tigers in the Virginia Independent Conference.

North Cross (10-8, 9-4) trailed 39-38 at halftime, but Monty Smith scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half to help lift the Raiders to the victory. Smith also grabbed 12 rebounds.

\ Craig County 55\ Highland 47

MONTEREY - Bobby Huffman scored a game-high 24 points as the Rockets downed the Rams in a Pioneer District game.

Gary Abbott added 12 points for Craig County (4-7, 3-5), which raced to a 32-16 halftime lead and coasted.

Jamie Botkin had 17 points and John Hull 11 for Highland (1-11, 0-9).
