NORTHSIDE CLAIMS TITLE IN REGION III

Three things stood out at the Group AA Region III wrestling tournament which concluded Tuesday night at Rockbridge County High School:

Domination of the event by the Blue Ridge District.

The youth of team champion Northside.

The performance of William Byrd's three individual champs, who combined to pin 11 of 12 opponents.

Northside defended its regional championship by easily outdistancing second place Brookville, 223-147. Four of Northside's individual titlists are underclassmen, including sophomore Brad Hungate (112 pounds).

The Blue Ridge District took five of the first six team positions. Byrd was third (141), and Alleghany (109) placed fourth, one spot better than its fifth-place in the district.

Lord Botetourt and Salem finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

"Northside's made us all better," Botetourt coach Mark Agner said.

Byrd's Patrick Henderson (135 champ) and Jason Hogan (152) pinned four opponents each to win their first regional championships. Heath Brogan, a Byrd champ at 140, pinned three out of four.

\ Region C wrestling

Three Grayson County wrestlers won individual titles as the Blue Devils captured the Region C wrestling tournament Tuesday at Glenvar High School, beating James River 190-160 1/2.

Nicky Arduin (112), Eric Rector (145) and Eric Montgomery (152) all won by pins in the finals. Todd Washington (140) won James River's only individual title.

RVD track and field

BLACKSBURG - It was a Patrick Henry sweep as the Patriots claimed both the boys' and girls' Roanoke Valley District indoor track titles Monday at Rector Fieldhouse.
