EX-DELEGATE WINS SENATE SEAT

Del. Stephen Martin received 74 percent of the vote to win a four-way race in a special election for the 11th Senate District seat.

According to unofficial results Tuesday night, the Chesterfield Republican received 14,295 votes.

Former Democratic Del. Alexander McMurtrie Jr. got 22 percent (4,218); Thomas Jamerson, an independent, received 2 percent (452); and independent Bradley Evans had less than 1 percent (148).

The vacancy occurred when former state Sen. Robert Russell, R-Chesterfield, resigned Jan. 25 shortly before he was sentenced for embezzlement.

Only 24 percent of the 79,548 registered voters turned out for the election. The district covers central and southern Chesterfield, all of Amelia County, two precincts in Dinwiddie County and the city of Colonial Heights.

Martin said he will resign his House seat after election results are certified Thursday and will be immediately sworn in as a Senate member.
