BULLDOGS BITE WARRIORS

Michael and Carlos Martin combined to score 32 points for Martinsville, and Magna Vista made only 14-of-33 field goals as the Bulldogs won 54-45 on Tuesday in a Piedmont District boys' basketball game.

The Bulldogs clinched a tie for the regular-season title and a win at Gretna on Wednesday would give them the crown outright. Magna Vista is tied for second place with Laurel Park.

Michael Martin scored 20 for Martinsville (15-3, 14-2), and Carlos Martin added 12. Evan Penn led Magna Vista (12-4, 12-4) with 10 points.

The Warriors were 3-of-20 from 3-point range. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 60

Patrick County 43

FIELDALE - Ben Seay scored 18 points as the Cavaliers scored early and often to roll past the Cougars in a Piedmont District game.

Fieldale-Collinsville (10-9, 10-6) broke to an 18-10 first-quarter lead and never looked back against the Cougars (2-15, 2-14).

Chad Cobb added 14 points for the winners. Brian Hylton led the Cougars with 16 points. \

Roanoke Catholic 64

MARTINSVILLE - Kevin Warren scored eight of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, and the Cavaliers hung on for a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Celtics.

Carlisle (7-13, 5-7) led 39-26 at halftime but was outscored 20-12 in the third quarter when Roanoke Catholic cut the lead to 51-46. The Cavaliers held an 18-17 advantage in the final quarter.

The Cavs, who were 10-of-14 from the free-throw line, also got 15 points from Ryan Smith and 12 from Rod Mitchell.

Deon Royer paced Roanoke Catholic (7-13, 4-9) with 22 points, including three 3-pointers. Jemarh Patterson added 16 points and Tony Joyce 14 for the Celtics. \

Fort Chiswell 53

FLOYD - The Buffaloes bolted to a 47-19 halftime lead and cruised to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Brian Harmon and Phillip Marshall led Floyd County (14-2, 13-2) with 18 points each. Harmon had 14 points in the first quarter, when the Buffaloes seized control, 27-11.

Fort Chiswell (7-12, 6-11) got 13 points from Jody Burnett and 12 from Dyer Jackson. \

BASSETT - The Trojans hit 13 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter as they topped the Bengals for a Piedmont District victory.

Tunstall led 54-53 after three quarters and by seven in the fourth. Bassett cut the lead to 75-73 on the strength of two 3-pointers by Art Wade but was forced to sent the Trojans to the foul line. Quan Breedlove sank 6 of 8 free throws and Chris Walton and Khris Law went 3-for-4 each to give Tunstall (11-8, 10-6) the edge.

Walton led the Trojans with 23 points and Khris Law had 21.

Wade scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, for Bassett (7-11, 7-9). Tyree Hairston had 20 points and Steve Pilson chipped in 16. \

Gretna 57

GRETNA - The Lancers made 16 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter to fend off the pesky Hawks in a Piedmont District game.

Laurel Park (13-6, 12-4) broke open a tie at 54 by outscoring Gretna (4-14, 4-12) 12-3 in the game's final three minutes.

Girard Foster led the Lancers with 20 points, while Darrell Wilson added 13. William Merritt paced Gretna with 20 points and Jason Tucker added 16.

LEBANON - Jeff Bourne made two free throws with seven seconds remaining in overtime that lifted the Maroons to a Hogoheegee District victory over the Pioneers (11-7, 9-2).

Bourne finished with 11 points for George Wythe (10-8, 9-5). Aaron Andrews had a team-high 18, and Andre Cook added 13. \

LYNCHBURG - The Bulldogs led 53-4 after three quarters en route to a Blue Ridge Conference tournament victory over the Chiefs.

Shannon Carroll led Lynchburg (17-1) with 16 points. The Bulldogs took a 20-4 lead after one quarter and led 40-4 at halftime. \
