FOOD STORE GUTTED BY AFTERNOON BLAZE

Fire did extensive damage to the Stop In Food Store at 3809 Brambleton Avenue S.W. on Wednesday afternoon.

Steve Poff, a battalion commander with the Roanoke County Fire Department, said the blaze was contained to a rear portion of the building, but heavy smoke and heat ravaged the store's inventory.

The fire was caused when a baseboard heater ignited some paper and furnishings in the store's office, according to Don Gillispie, Roanoke County fire marshal.
