Middle school teachers Jane Goette and Kat McClinton, former Montgomery County School Board Chairman Daniel Schneck and Lutheran minister the Rev. Gary Schroeder will receive community service awards for their contributions promoting diversity and education.
Goette, the gifted and talented coordinator for Montgomery County's public schools, is being recognized for leadership in the curriculum "Facing History and Ourselves." Her eighth-grade social studies classes at Blacksburg Middle School learned about the Holocaust and how social and political pressures can lead to injustice and intolerance.
McClinton, a teacher at Christiansburg Middle School, is being honored for her role in "Black Americans Dedicated to Success." The program is being credited with increasing academic achievement among the school's black students.
Schneck, a Virginia Tech professor, will be recognized for his dedication to public service and his support of community diversity. Schneck resigned as chairman of the School Board in the wake of a controversy over whether to designate school holidays as Christmas and Easter or winter and spring. He had supported keeping the seasonal labels used in the school calendar.
Schroeder, the pastor of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, will be honored for his leadership on the Montgomery County Human Relations Council.
The annual meeting gets under way at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, 107 W. Main St. with a 6:30 p.m. social hour. A potluck supper, where the awards ceremony will take place, starts at 7.
