JIM SMALLWOOD of Roanoke has been named director of corporate energy and project sourcing for Owens-Corning.

Smallwood, who joined Owens-Corning in 1977, graduated from Clemson University in 1974 with a degree in administrative management and earned a master's degree from Furman University in 1981.

\ ROBYN MORGAN and DAWN SIMPKINS, both employees at Kemper National Insurance Companies, recently received certificates from the Insurance Institute of America for successfully completing an introduction to claims course and a national examination.

The institute is an independent non-profit organization offering educational programs and professional certification to people in the property-liability insurance business.

\ UNITED WAY OF THE ROANOKE VALLEY has named the following winners in its 10th annual Employee Communication Contest: WDBJ, employee publications category, for a United Way information pamphlet; Crestar Bank, audio-visual programs category, for a video recognizing employee participation; Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, campaign communications category, for its "United Way Week"; Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia, special events category, for its version of "Let's Make a Deal" and the photography category, for color photographs of its campaign kickoff.
