PARRY MCCLUER BLASTS HIGHLAND

Parry McCluer built a 39-point halftime lead and cruised to a 98-48 Pioneer District boys' basketball victory over Highland on Thursday.

Nathan Baker scored 24 points, and Nathan Floyd added 20 for Parry McCluer (16-2, 9-1).

John Hall led Highland with 18 points. \

Wednesday's games

\ Northwood 111, George Wythe 86: At Saltville, Jon Griffin poured in 51 points - 31 of them in the first half - as the Panthers whipped the Maroons in a Hogoheegee District game. Northwood (8-11, 5-7) trailed 27-24 after one quarter, but outscored George Wythe 33-11 in the second to take control. Griffin's 51 points broke the school record of 37 points set in 1987. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out 13 assists. Andre Cook led the Maroons (10-9, 9-6) with 19 points. \

Tunstall 89, Magna Vista 85: At Tunstall, Chris Walton and Khris Law each scored five points in overtime as the Trojans edged the Warriors in overtime of a Piedmont District game. Walton, who finished with 30 points, hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into the extra period. Law finished with 29 points. Tony Holmes led Magna Vista (12-5, 12-5) with 30 points. \

Floyd County 70, Bland 58: In Bland, the Buffaloes capitalized off turnovers and fouls in the fourth quarter en route to a Mountain Empire District victory. Floyd County sank five of nine free throws in the last period.

Jason Light scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Buffaloes (15-2, 14-2). Phillip Marshall had 17 points and Jamie Warren chipped in 12.

Kevin King led the Rockets (10-9, 9-7) with 15 points. Andy Selfe had 10 and Shannon Havens grabbed nine rebounds. \

Martinsville 71, Gretna 53: In Gretna, the Bulldogs used a 9-0 run in middle of the third period to capture the Piedmont District regular-season title.

Martinsville (16-3, 15-2) led 32-28 at halftime, but outscored Gretna (4-15, 4-13) 23-12 in the third period to take control.

Michael Martin led Martinsville with 23 points. \

Bassett 67, Chatham 49: In Bassett, the Bengals used a halfcourt trap to spark a 10-0 run that broke open the game in the second quarter and went on to a Piedmont District victory over the Cavaliers.

Bassett (8-11, 8-9) held Chatham to 3-for-18 field-goal shooting in the second quarter while outscoring the Cavaliers 21-8.

Tyree Hairston led the Bengals with 26 points, Steve Pilson had 11 and Art Wade scored 10.

Adam Lovelace had 14 points for Chatham (6-13, 4-12).

\ Salem 86, Rockbridge County 30: Matt Woolwine scored 26 points as the Spartans clinched the Blue Ridge District regular-season title with a rout of the Wildcats.

Mark Byington and Nathan Routt added 18 points each for Salem (16-1, 9-0). Byington hit four 3-pointers and Kevin Garst (11 points) made three.

Marty Early scored 12 points to lead Rockbridge County (6-11, 0-9), which was outscored 41-10 in the second half. \

Covington Boys' Home 72, Union, W.Va., 64: In Covington, Scottie Forbes scored 20 points and Greg Kier added a season-high 19 as the Indians defeated the visitors from West Virginia.

Donnie Costigan had 16 points for Covington Boys' Home (11-7) before sitting out much of the second half as the Indians played their reserves.

Mark Jenkins scored a game-high 34 points for Union. \

Hargrave 73, Carlisle 46: In Martinsville, Billy Reed gunned in 32 points as the Tigers whipped the Chiefs in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Hargrave took a 26-13 lead after one quarter, but Carlisle (7-14, 5-8) cut it to 32-26 at halftime. However, the Tigers used a 27-10 third period to put the game out of reach.

Ryan Smith led the Chiefs with 10 points. \

Laurel Park 63, Fieldale-Collinsville 55: In Martinsville, the Lancers used a 16-8 fourth quarter to take a Piedmont District game over the Cavaliers.

Girard Foster scored 18 points and Warrick Scott added 14 as Laurel Park (14-6, 13-4) overcame a one-point halftime deficit.

The Lancers took a five-point lead early in the final period and forced the Cavaliers (10-10, 10-7) to switch their zone defense to man.

Ben Seay led the Cavaliers with 18 points. \

Craig County 56, James River 54: In New Castle, Robby Huffman scored big from the free-throw line for the Rockets and the result was a Pioneer District win over the Knights in overtime.

Huffman was 15-of-17 on free throws, including 6-of-7 in overtime, as Craig County (5-7, 4-5) hit 10-of-14 foul shots in the extra period.

Huffman finished with 23 points and a school-record 25 rebounds.

James River (3-13, 2-9) led by as many as 12 points in the third period, but the Rockets stormed back with their trapping defense. Down three points with seven seconds remaining, Huffman was fouled at the 3-point line. He sank all three free throws, which sent the game into the extra period. \
