THE STATE SONG BLUES

The General Assembly, prodded by state Sen. Madison Marye of Montgomery County, is debating whether to change the lyrics to the state song.

Want to hear what the new version of "Carry Me Back to Old Virginia" might sound like?

Call infoline and press 7664 (SONG).

You'll hear a musical rendition of the state song - the revised version by Sen. Marye - then you'll get a chance to vote on whether you think Virginia should adopt it as our official anthem.

Here are the choices you'll have:

#1. Hey, I like Marye's revised version. Yes, I think the General Assembly should adopt this as the state song.

#2. Heck no, let's keep the old version. It's tradition.

#3. Come on! Where the "cotton and the corn and 'tatoes grow"? What state are we talking about here? Mississippi??? We need something more modern, more suburban. Let's trash both versions and commission Bruce Hornsby or the Statler Brothers or some other Virginia musician to come up with an entirely new song.
