GETTING RID OF BRUSH, THE RIGHT WAY

The ice storm has left a monster pile of brush in your yard.

What to do?

It is illegal to burn the pile of tree limbs and debris in Blacksburg and Radford.

Burning is legal in Pulaski, Dublin, Floyd (town) and Christiansburg, but must be done carefully:

Choose an open area, away from trees, overhanging branches, buildings, automobiles and other flammable material.

Rake the area clean for several feet around where you will burn.

Call the fire department with location and burn times.

Have a person with the fire at all times.

Keep the area raked clean during burning.

Keep a fire small and manageable.

Have a water source nearby - a garden hose or several containers of water.

Effective March 1, state law dictates that fires may be burned only between 4 p.m. and midnight, when the wind is not blowing.
