BELLSOUTH LAYOFF ESTIMATES IN ERROR

BellSouth Communication Systems Inc. said Thursday it expects 25 to 30 employees in its Roanoke headquarters to be affected immediately by the sale of a portion of its operations to WilTel Communications Systems Inc. of Houston and an unknown number in Roanoke to face layoff or transfer in streamlining later.

A total of 800 BellSouth Communication Systems employees affected by the proposed sale work in 29 states outside the nine Southeastern states that comprise the major operating territory of its Atlanta-based parent, BellSouth Corp. That territory includes Alabama, the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Prior to the sale, BellSouth Communication Systems employed 250 employees in its Roanoke headquarters. Because of misinformation supplied by sources, a story on Thursday's Business page reported that the 800 employees affected by the sale were in BellSouth Communication Systems' Roanoke office.
