RALLY GIVES GRAYSON MOUNTAIN EMPIRE TITLE

Grayson County trailed by 14 points after three quarter but came back defeat Giles 72-67 in overtime and clinch the regular-season title in Mountain Empire District boys' basketball.

Keith Westerman and Bryan Boyer combined for 45 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter, for the Blue Devils (18-3, 16-2). Westerman finished with a game-high 23 points, and Boyer added 22.

Danny Self scored five of his eight points in the overtime, including a 3-pointer off the opening tip that put Grayson County ahead 66-63.

Marty Smith had 13 points to lead the Spartans (11-8, 11-6). Giles also got 11 points apiece from Patrick Steele and Mitch Reed.

Giles had the ball in the backcourt with two seconds remaining in regulation but made a turnover. Boyer's attempt to end the game in regulation for Grayson County fell short at the buzzer. \

LEXINGTON - Dusty Rowland hit 10 of 11 free throws in the final quarter as the Mountaineers deprived the Wildcats of their first Blue Ridge District victory of the season.

The Wildcats led 48-47 after three quarters but couldn't hold on despite 17 points by Marty Early. Rob Hoyle scored 14 points and Martin Mayercheck added 11 for Rockbridge (6-12, 0-10).

Rowland was the high scorer for Alleghany (11-8, 5-5), which got 14 points from Jermaine Winston and 13 from Todd Crawford, including three 3-pointers.

MARTINSVILLE - The Bulldogs (17-3, 16-2) capped their Piedmont District championship regular season with a home-floor, double-overtime victory over the Bengals.

It couldn't have been closer.

The score was tied at 41 at the end of three quarters, tied at 59 at the end of regulation and tied at the same score after the first overtime.

Martinsville got the tip to start overtime and held the ball, but Carlos Martin's shot with six seconds left bounced away.

In the second overtime, Michael Martin finished his game-high, 29-point night with four of his team's five points in the period as Martinsville hung on.

Art Wade's 23 points paced the Bengals (8-12, 8-10). \

Magna Vista 92

Laurel Park 91

RIDGEWAY - Evan Penn made three free throws in the final 11 seconds as the Warriors won a Piedmont District thriller over the Lancers.

Magna Vista (13-5, 13-5) trailed by 19 points in the first half before launching its comeback. Mac Inge led the Warriors with 25 points, Rodney Redd had 18, Marcus Toney added 17 and Penn put in 13.

The Warriors began the third quarter behind by 12 points and employed a man-to-man trapping defense that confused Laurel Park and forced numerous turnovers.

Penn had a couple of key steals during Magna Vista's comeback, including one after making two free throws with 11 seconds left. The Warriors outscored the Lancers 56-43 in the second half.

Laurel Park (14-7, 13-5) got a game-high 28 points from Girard Foster. Darrell Wilson added 21 points and Warrick Scott had 19. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 51

Chatham 50

COLLINSVILLE - Nat Law tied the score with a 3-pointer and hit the winning free throw as Fieldale-Collinsville's Cavaliers (11-10, 11-7) defeated Chatham's Cavaliers in the Piedmont District game.

Chatham led by three points with 1:15 remaining, and Law hit his 3-pointer from the wing with 30 seconds to play to make the score 50-50. After a Chatham timeout, Wayne Draper made a steal and was fouled with 20 seconds to play. He missed his free throw in a bonus situation. Law grabbed the loose ball and was fouled driving to the basket with 17 seconds remaining. He hit one free throw for a 51-50 lead. Chatham drove downcourt and missed a shot and Fieldale-Collinsville's Devon Joyce got the rebound and was fouled, but missed his free throw. Chatham rebounded but didn't get off another shot.

Chad Cobb had 14 points for Fieldale-Collinsville, and Ben Seay and Shane Donnovant added 12 each.

Derick Logan's 14 points and Jerome Smith's 10 led Chatham. \

Auburn 68

Rocky Gap 66

RINER - Randy Bonds scored 19 points as Auburn battled back from a 16-point first-quarter deficit to beat Rocky Gap in the Mountain Empire District.

Jon Reed scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half to key the comeback for Auburn (13-7, 12-6). Reed also had 12 rebounds. Mike Bower added 11 points and Terry Millirons 10 for Auburn.

Eric Faulkner paced Rocky Gap (5-15, 5-13) with 16 points. Dale Martin added 14 points, Nathan Blessing 12 and Tracy Bradshaw 11.

Auburn's Matt Davis blocked four shots in the game to set a single-season school record. Davis' total of 54 breaks the record of 51 set by Darin Greear in the 1989-90 season. \

Rural Retreat 86

RURAL RETREAT - Rusty Crigger led four Indians (8-9, 7-7) in double figures in a Hogoheegee District victory over the Maroons (10-10, 9-5).

Crigger scored 23 points, Jason Childers had 16, W.K. Smith 15 and Stephen Pratt 12 for Rural Retreat, which was 24-of-34 on free throws.

George Wythe, which scored 26 of its points on free throws, was led by Aaron Andrews and Jon Ervin with 15 points each and Ian Fiorini with 13.

\ Bath County 82

Highland 56

HOT SPRINGS - The Chargers (9-8, 5-5) used a balanced attack to offset a high-scoring trio of Rams as they cruised to a Pioneer District victory.

All 14 Bath County player scored, led by career-high efforts from Jamie McElwee (12 points), Danny Cardwell (12) and Ray Wagner (seven). Ricky Ricketts had a career-high eight assists.

John Hull scored 25 points, also his career-best effort, to lead Highland (1-13, 0-11). Jamie Botkin had 14 points, and Tracy Hiner added 10. \

Thursday's games

\ Glenvar 71, Covington 68: At Covington, the Highlanders got back into the Pioneer District race with an upset of the Cougars.

The Highlanders (10-5, 7-2), led by Jason Anderson with 23 points and Brad Melton with 21, built a 40-25 halftime lead. They withstood a rally by the Cougars (11-8, 8-2), who closed to the final margin on Corey Hunter's fifth 3-point goal. Hunter had 32 points to lead all scorers.

Glenvar is one game behind league-leading Parry McCluer in the loss column.

\ Bath County 60, Craig County 45: Lee Phillips scored 13 points as Bath County (8-8, 4-5) coasted to the Pioneer District victory. Craig County (5-8, 4-6) was paced by James Fisher with a game-high 19 points.
