First, the Terriers defeated visiting Lord Botetourt 66-52 in a Blue Ridge District boys' basketball game.
Then, Byrd won a coin flip that gave the Terriers the No. 3 seeding for the district tournament next week.
Terriers coach Paul Barnard was only slightly more pleased with the result of the game than he was with the coin flip.
"This means that we don't have to win the tournament to get to the regional," said Barnard, whose Terriers (11-8 overall, 5-5 district) tied for third place with Alleghany. Byrd will meet sixth-seeded Rockbridge at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Mike McGuire had a game-high 17 points and six assists and Jeremy Obenchain contributed 15 points and 15 rebounds as Byrd beat the Cavaliers (9-9, 2-8) for the second time. The most crucial statistic was free-throw shooting: Byrd was 21-of-25 and Botetourt was 4-of-15.
