NORTH MAILS CORRECTION TO FUND-RAISING PAMPHLET

Republican Senate candidate Oliver North has mailed a correction to a political pamphlet that said he served two tours of duty in Vietnam.

"Although this is a small mistake, we are in an election year, so I wanted to notify you about it as soon as possible," North wrote in the "Priority Express" letter to potential supporters. "Unlike a lot of the Washington insider crowd, when I make a mistake I admit it."

North added a postscript pointing out a typographical error that he said "my mom, a former schoolteacher, also pointed out."

In the earlier pamphlet, North was pictured as a hero fighting to shine light on "the dark corridors of power" in Washington.

"When his country asked him to fight, he did so without hesitation," the pamphlet said. "He served two tours in Vietnam. Not in the rear, but in the front lines."

North wrote in the "Dear Friend" correction letter that, "As a Marine, I went to Vietnam twice, but I served only one full tour."

North's credibility came under fire Thursday from several retired military officers backing his Republican opponent, Jim Miller.

North in turn accused Miller of taking four student deferments to avoid the war in Vietnam.

Miller was budget director during Reagan's second term.

North was a central figure in the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages controversy while serving on Reagan's National Security Council.

North is considered the front-runner for the nomination. Republicans will nominate their Senate candidate at a convention June 3-4 in Richmond.

The Democrats will hold a primary race June 14 between incumbent Sen. Charles Robb and Sylvia Clute, a Richmond lawyer.
