Mattox, 44, is a deputy U.S. marshal in Roanoke. He has received four achievement awards for Mattox "Sustained Superior Performance" from the U.S. Marshal Service, and has held every position in the organization during his 22-year career - except U.S. marshal.
"It's been a goal of mine for 20 years," Mattox said of the nomination. "I really feel with my experience, I can hit the ground running with no lag time."
If the nomination is approved by the Senate, Mattox will replace U.S. Marshal John Metzger, who was appointed in 1992 by President George Bush but was never officially confirmed by the Senate.
Reached Friday night, Metzger said Robb's nomination of Mattox came as no surprise.
"I'm not a member of the Democratic Party," said Metzger, who had just returned to the United States after extraditing a prisoner from Paris. "I wish [Mattox] well."
The U.S. marshal and U.S. attorney are the only federal political appointments in the western half of the state.
