WILD TECH PARTY GETS OUT OF HAND

Town police shut down an overcrowded private party at the Hokie House restaurant early Saturday after a fight outside sent one woman to the hospital.

That was just a highlight of a night that saw swarms of Virginia Tech students crowding downtown, blocking sidewalks and generally enjoying an unseasonably warm Friday night.

Students packed the Hokie House at 322 N. Main St. in downtown Blacksburg, which had been rented to a group of individuals. A crowd of more than 50 students spilled out into the street and blocked the side road to Main Street in front of the restaurant, police said.

Town police started clearing the crowd out front at 1 a.m. and at least eight officers remained a half-hour later.

"It was totally out of control," Blacksburg police Sgt. J.G. Frazier said. "The management couldn't control the crowd."

A fight broke out between two men outside the Hokie House shortly before 1 a.m. A woman, whose name was not available, was hit in the head when she got in the middle of the fight, Frazier said.

The woman was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital.

Frazier said there were no arrests made, but that there were several alcohol violations.

He said a group apparently got together and raised enough money to rent the Hokie House for the evening.

"This is supposed to be the party of the night," said one student in front of the restaurant.

Hokie House management could not be reached for comment.
