The score was tied at 59 when Gay scored on a running jumper. After Tim Heath made a free throw for Georgia Southern, VMI (4-19 overall, 2-13 in the conference) closed to 62-61 on a field goal by Jonathan Goodman with 11 seconds left.
After a timeout by the Eagles (12-11, 8-7), Heath was fouled again. He made one free throw with five seconds left, and a desperation 35-footer by the Keydets' Bryan Woolsey fell short as time expired.
"This was a real quality win for us," said coach Frank Kerns, whose Georgia Southern team missed 18 of 34 free throws.
VMI led 36-29 with 17 minutes, 47 seconds left in the game, but the Eagles went ahead 44-43 on a jumper by Gay with 11:36 remaining and never trailed again. The Keydets shot 33.9 percent for the game.
"Our kids played hard, but we didn't shoot the ball very well again," said Joe Cantafio, VMI's coach. "When you shoot the ball 33 or 34 percent, you can't win. We did a good job on them, but to no avail."
Georgia Southern got 11 points from Heath and 10 rebounds from Pierre McKisic.
The Keydets were led by Lawrence Gullette and Maurice Spencer with 13 points apiece and Goodman with 12. Darryl Faulkner added 11 points.
