"This is the game that scared me the most of our [remaining games]," said Virginia Tech's coach.
South Florida confirmed Alfano's worries with a 77-64 Metro Conference victory before an estimated 200 spectators at the Sun Dome.
Tech (17-5 overall, 5-3 in the Metro) saw its six-game winning streak snapped with its first loss to the Bulls in seven meetings. South Florida has won seven of its past nine games and is 13-10 and 6-4, essentially tied with Tech for second place in the Metro.
Six-foot-one Tammy Van Oppen and 6-2 Keira Rozier combined for 44 points on 16-for-29 field-goal shooting to lead the Bulls. South Florida also got 12 second-half points from senior guard Renee Bellamy, including six in a 15-4 run that gave the Bulls a 58-53 advantage.
Tech had one field goal in an 8-minute, 40-second stretch of the second half, during which the Hokies went from three up to nine down.
"We didn't penetrate as much as we did the first half," said Tech's Angela Donnell, who had 21 points but missed a put-back that could have cut South Florida's lead to six with about three minutes left. "It was there, but their zone [defense] was great."
Donnell and center Jenny Root combined for 21 points at halftime, but Root went 0-for-6 from the field in the second half.
Tech got little from the perimeter until the end, when a Lisa Leftwich 3-pointer and a Christi Osborne 18-footer made it 69-64 South Florida with 1:36 left. The Bulls hit six consecutive free throws to stay ahead.
The Hokies used a 13-2 spurt (Donnell had six) to take a 49-43 lead with 15:06 to go. The Bulls called time out, then got a 3-pointer from Jenny Koeppel and an inside bucket from Rachel Brown in the next 1:08 to cut their deficit to one.
The Bulls took the lead for good on Bellamy's pull-up jumper at 52-51 with 11:31 left.
