PULASKI COUNTY HAS POOR 1ST HALF IN LOSS TO GLASS

E.C. Glass took a 16 point halftime lead and defeated Pulaski County 72-56 in a non-district boys' basketball game Saturday.

The Hilltoppers (9-8), which beat Pulaski County's district mate Patrick Henry Friday night, was led by Chris Tunkel's 15 points and Eric Reid's 13.

Eric Webb led the Cougars (6-12) with 25 points, but star guard Tyrone Hash got into foul trouble early and played sparingly. He finished with eight points.

The Hilltoppers made 18 of 30 free throws. \

ROCKY GAP - The Maroon Tide hit 21 of 27 free throws to edge the Eagles in the first round of the Mountain Empire District tournament.

Jeff Ross was the only double-figure scorer for Galax (5-16), hitting for 14 points. The Maroon Tide advances to a quarterfinal game Tuesday, probably against Grayson County.

Dale Martin scored 11 points and Eric Faulkner had 10 for Rocky Gap (5-16), which missed two shots to tie the score on its last possession of the game. The Eagles hit only two of 10 free throws in the game. \

FORT CHISWELL - Jody Burnett and Dyer Jackson combined for 49 points as the Pioneers whipped the Shawnees in the opening round of the Mountain Empire District tournament.

Fort Chiswell (9-12), the tournament's seventh seed, will play No. 2 Floyd County Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

Burnette finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Jackson scored 23 points. The Pioneers led 25-11 after the first quarter and extended their lead from there.

Shawsville (0-20), the No. 10 seed, was led by Jeremy Nichols and Tommy Jones, who scored 11 points apiece. \

BLAND - Anthony Myers scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the third quarter as the Spartans pulled away for a Mountain Empire District win.

Giles (12-8, 12-6) led 29-28 at halftime but outscored Bland (10-11, 9-9) 25-5 in the third period. Myers nailed three 3-pointers early in the period to break the game open.

HILLSVILLE - Willie Bryant hit two free throws with six seconds remaining to nail down a non-district win for the Cavaliers.

Carroll County (7-12) led by six points at halftime, but had its lead cut to 52-50 with eight seconds remaining. Bryant, who finished with 14 points, was fouled immediately.

John Woolford led the Cavaliers with 16 points and Wes Jones led Patrick County (3-17) with 15 points. \
