7 FRANKLIN COUNTY WRESTLERS EARN STATE BERTHS

Franklin County's hold on the Northwestern Region wrestling tournament was broken Saturday night.

Stonewall Jackson of Manassas had three individual champions and 186.5 points to take the regional title. Woodbridge was second (164.5), followed by Osbourn Park (140), Franklin County (127) and William Fleming (122).

The Eagles, two-time defending champions, saw two of their individuals earn regional titles. Brian Saul won at 103 pounds, beating Scott Jonely of Woodbridge 10-8 in the final, and Brian Jones claimed the 135-pound title by beating Steve Rossi of Woodbridge 8-6.

Cave Spring had an individual champion in John Richardson, who claimed the 160-pound title by pinning his opponent.

Eddie Jones of William Fleming lost in the 189-pound final, 2-0, to Nathan Frampton of Stonewall Jackson. It was only the second loss for Jones in 34 matches, both to Frampton.

Franklin County will take seven wrestlers to the Group AAA state tournament next week in Richmond. William Fleming will take five and Cave Spring qualified two.

Osbourn Park went 4-for-4 in the finals, with four brothers winning their weight classes. Micah and Nathan Zehring won at 125 and 130 pounds, respectively, and Kris (140 pounds) and Scott Bishop (171) also earned titles.
