DIXIE PAIRINGS TAKING SHAPE

Christopher Newport earned a night off as the top seed in the Dixie Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments, which begin Tuesday on the courts of the higher-seeded teams.

In men's play, the Captains (21-3 overall, 11-1 in the conference) get a bye and will be home Wednesday night against the winner of Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. game matching No. 4 Ferrum (11-12, 6-6) and No. 5 Methodist (13-11, 4-8).

In other first-round matchups, No. 6 Shenandoah (8-16, 3-9) is at No. 3 Averett (12-11, 6-6) and No. 7 North Carolina Wesleyan (9-15, 2-10) visits No. 2 Greensboro (21-3, 10-2).

Christopher Newport's women (15-9, 9-3) await the winner of Tuesday night's game matching No. 4 Methodist (15-9, 8-4) and No. 5 Greensboro (9-15, 4-8).

Ferrum (15-9, 8-4) is seeded third and opens at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against No. 6 Shenandoah (5-18, 3-9). In the other first-round matchup, No. 7 Averett (5-19, 1-11) is at No. 2 North Carolina Wesleyan (16-7, 9-3). - Staff report
